Turbo Engines - What Are The Benefits Of Them? - Vol.257

Turbo. Just the word itself evokes feelings of a high powered engine that allows your car to tear up the roads and rocket past other drivers. It's a word that has been used to promote souped up engines for decades but what does it actually mean? What can a turbo engine offer the average driver that a standard engine simply can't compete with? Here's a small list of the things that make a turbo engine great.

Fuel Economy
Simply put, when compared to a standard engine of equivalent size a turbo variety will consume less fuel for the same amount of performance. This is actually because a turbo charged engine is smaller than a standard engine and can thus create the same level of power with fewer cylinders.

As an example, if you take a 250bhp engine and compare it to the turbo engine with the same output, the turbo version will be able to hit the same speeds using only four cylinders, while the standard version will require six. These additional cylinders require more fuel, making the turbo engine more efficient for the same drive.

Weight
With that reduced size comes a reduction in the weight of the engine. This aids the vehicle's overall performance as a lighter car is much more efficient and requires less power to achieve the same results. It also aids in handling, as the lighter vehicle will generally be much easier to maneuver and will be somewhat less clunky than a vehicle using a bulkier standard engine.

Noise
While some appreciate a good and solid engine rev, others may wish to experience their drive in a little more peace. For those people the turbo engine is the ideal choice as, again due to the size and power of the engine, less revving will be needed to achieve the same results. Furthermore the turbocharge also acts as something of a muffler, ensuring that any sound generated by the engine is curtailed and the driver can instead sit back and enjoy the ride.

Cost
While it is true that a turbo engine will generally cost a little bit more upfront than a standard engine, this is offset rather dramatically by the savings you can make while using one. Due to the fact that the engine will require less fuel for the same level of performance, you will be able to save plenty of money on your gas bills over time. Given a long enough period the engine will more than pay for itself and you will end up wondering how you ever managed to do without it.

Lower emissions
Another point that is linked in to the fact that turbo engines require less fuel to run than a standard engine. If you're using less fuel your car is also emitting less carbon dioxide and other harmful gases that are causing damage to the atmosphere. This means that a turbo engine is a great choice for the environmentally conscious and you can do a little bit of good whilst also experiencing an enhanced level of performance.

Fun
Let's be honest, even the word turbo conjures up an image of fun and a good turbo engine won't disappoint. Should you ever get the opportunity to really let loose and drive at higher speeds, the turbo engine will ensure that you have all of the power you need to truly enjoy the experience. Furthermore, because less power and fuel is needed to reach those speeds you can enjoy the drive in the knowledge that the whole thing is just a tad safer than it would be if you were using a normal engine.
